Portrait of a laughing young girl in soft outdoor light

About

Hi, I'm Eli.

I make portraits in Los Gatos, California. Most of the people who sit for me say the same thing when they walk in: I'm not photogenic, I never know what to do with my hands.

You don't have to. That part is my job. Every session is fully guided: where to put your weight, where to look, when to breathe out, what to do with those hands. I give direction in small, specific pieces, and I keep giving it until the picture is right. You will never be left standing there wondering.

The studio is warm and quiet and genuinely family-friendly. There is a sofa, a kettle, snacks for the kids, and space on the floor for a toddler who needs a minute. Nobody is expected to behave perfectly. The good frames usually arrive right after something goes slightly sideways.

I photograph with soft, shaped light and edit with a light hand: warm skin, real texture, nothing plastic. My work is for families across San Jose, Saratoga, Campbell, and the wider South Bay who want images that will still feel honest in twenty years.

When I'm not in the studio, I'm usually out in the foothills at the last hour of light, or in line for coffee in downtown Los Gatos.

What a portrait is

“A portrait is an artistic representation of a person, a painting, a photograph, a sculpture, made to show their likeness, personality, and mood.”
That last part is the whole job. Anyone can record a likeness. I'm after the way you hold your shoulders when you finally relax, the look you give the person you love.
